Aren't you just enabling the flights you're offsetting?

We're not here to tell you not to go. Reduce what you can, offset what's left, and know exactly where the money goes.

This trip matters to you, and we're not going to pretend that's up for debate. For a lot of people, experiencing the concert live isn't optional in any way a simple ‘don’t go’ answer respects. What we can actually do is help people see the real carbon and offset costs clearly of different transit options. Over time, we're hoping that seeing that data makes it easier to choose less carbon-intense travel: a train over a short-haul flight, carpooling instead of riding solo, or taking local public transportation. Offsetting is for travel that only has one real way to make happen, or trips you were always going to take regardless. Not a permission slip, and not a substitute for reducing what can actually be reduced. The honest next-best thing for what's left after that.

Why is this a company, not a nonprofit?

Thrivedom is a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation, a for-profit company with a legal obligation to weigh a stated public-benefit purpose against shareholder interest, not just profit alone. We're not asking you to think of this as a donation. It is paying for a real service: cleaning up carbon a real trip put into the atmosphere, the same way you'd pay someone to haul away waste. Our certificate of incorporation states that purpose directly: ‘to reduce the carbon impact of attending live events and enable attendees to take collective climate action through carbon offsetting and community participation.’ That's not marketing copy. It's the legal document that defines what we're allowed to exist to do.

Do offsets directly cancel out my travel emissions?

Not exactly, and we won't pretend otherwise. An offset removes or prevents a ton of CO2e somewhere in the world: a reforestation project, a methane-capture system, a renewable energy plant. But it doesn't happen at the same time as your flight, or in the same place. It's not a molecule-for-molecule undo. Offset quality varies a lot across the market. That's exactly why we only source from CORSIA-eligible registries, the same eligibility standard airlines themselves are held to for compliance offsetting, not the loosest credit we could find at the lowest price. It's not perfect. It's a real, checkable way to take responsibility for emissions that already happened, done as carefully as we know how.

When you pay to offset a trip, your money buys a verified carbon credit: a certificate confirming that a specific amount of CO2 has been removed from the atmosphere, or prevented from being released in the first place, by a specific project (a reforestation effort, a renewable energy plant, a methane-capture system). Every credit lives on a public registry that tracks who owns it, so it can't be sold or counted twice.

We only source from CORSIA-eligible registries, including Gold Standard and Verra: the same eligibility standard the UN's own aviation body holds airlines to for their compliance offsetting, not a bar we made up ourselves.

“Retiring” a credit means permanently marking it used: it comes off the registry for good and can never be resold, transferred, or claimed by anyone else. That's the actual mechanism behind an offset. Not a donation to a general cause, but the permanent retirement of one specific credit on your behalf. We purchase your credit within one business day of checkout, often the same day, an irrevocable commitment from that moment on. The retirement itself, the registry-side step that actually takes it out of circulation for good, is carried out by our offset vendor partners on their own schedule, typically that same window.

What happens when I donate to the community offset?

When you chip in to the community pool, whether through a “help cover a fellow ARMY's trip” prompt or the optional support add-on at checkout, we purchase a real credit with it right away: an irrevocable commitment, exactly like offsetting your own trip. It just isn't earmarked for any one person's trip. It goes toward covering fans who took low-carbon-footprint transit and logged that trip, but didn't pay to offset it themselves.

Under the hood, the pool actually does track which contributions cover which gaps, a real match, not just a shared bucket. We just don't surface that specific pairing to either side, to protect privacy. What you can count on: your contribution is purchased and committed the day you give it, not held waiting for a match to show up. After the tour wraps and logging activity settles down, any contributions still without a specific logged trip to cover get counted toward the broader transit footprint of everyone who attended the tour but never logged a trip with us at all. Nothing you give sits unused waiting for a match that might not come.

Every emission factor we use comes from DEFRA, the UK government's environment department, not a number we came up with ourselves. DEFRA publishes updated factors once a year, typically each June, and we version them: your trip is always calculated against the factor set that was actually in effect on your travel date, so a number stays accurate to what was true then, even after DEFRA updates its figures later.

The core math is simple: carbon emissions approximately equal the distance traveled times the emission factor for how you traveled. DEFRA publishes separate factors for flying, driving, trains, and local transit, since each mode has a different real-world emissions profile per mile or kilometer. Distance itself is our best estimate, not a certainty: we won't always know the exact route you actually took, whether that's where a layover flight connected, which of several possible roads a drive followed, or which specific bus or train line you rode when more than one option existed. Flight distance comes from actual airport coordinates, driving distance comes from real road routing (not a straight line, since roads rarely are one), and for trains and transit we use the best routing data available and a reasonable approximation where a clean route doesn't exist. It's the best number we can calculate from what you tell us, not a claim that we tracked your literal path.

Flights get a bit more detail, since they usually carry the biggest share of a trip's footprint. Cabin class changes the number: business and first class take up more physical space per seat, so DEFRA assigns them a larger share of a flight's total emissions than economy gets. A connecting flight adds real emissions a direct one doesn't, since every extra takeoff and landing is its own emissions event, so we add an adjustment on top of the base distance calculation to account for it rather than treating a one-stop and a nonstop covering the same distance as identical. And flights create warming beyond their CO2 alone: contrails and other high-altitude effects add to the real impact. We follow DEFRA's standard practice of applying a 1.7x adjustment to flight emissions to account for this, on top of the CO2 figure itself. It's why a flight's number can look larger than a CO2-only calculation would show: it's a more complete one, not an inflated one. That adjustment applies to flights specifically. It isn't used for driving or transit, since it accounts for an effect that's specific to emissions released at altitude.

Driving works a little differently. We calculate a car trip's full emissions, then divide by how many people were actually in the car, since that's the honest per-person share of a shared ride. We default new trips to one person, and assume a direct flight when a flight's involved, since asking every detail up front would slow the calculator down, but most of these assumptions (cabin class, connections, who else was in the car) are shown plainly on the calculation screen. One exception, worth being upfront about: for transit trips, we infer whether you took something local (a subway or city bus) or something longer-distance (an intercity train or coach) from the distance itself, since the calculator doesn't yet ask which kind of transit you used. That's a real heuristic, and it isn't shown or correctable today. Every calculation is logged against the exact DEFRA factor version used, so we can always show our work on the parts we do ask about.

Fan travel and tour footprints

How much of a tour's carbon footprint actually comes from fans traveling to the show?

Independent research consistently finds that fan travel, not production, staging, or artist/crew logistics, is the dominant source of a tour's total carbon footprint. MIT Climate Machine's December 2025 study, analyzing 80,000+ real events across the U.S. and U.K., found fan travel accounts for 62% of live-music emissions in the U.S. and 77% in the U.K. REVERB's Concert Travel Study, surveying 35,000+ fans across 400+ North American shows, separately found fan travel generates roughly 38x more emissions than artist/crew travel, hotels, and gear transport combined.

Can I get a refund?

No. The moment you check out, your payment is committed, irrevocably, full stop. We place the actual purchase with our offset vendor within one business day, often the same day, but that's about how fast the paperwork clears, not about whether your commitment could still be undone. There's no window between checkout and that purchase where anything is reversible. If something went wrong with the transaction itself (a duplicate charge, a payment that failed but still shows as pending), Contact can help. That's different from a completed offset, which is final and irrevocable from the moment you checked out.
